Essex Community Players Announces 60th Anniversary
2018/2019 Season

Essex Junction, VT – Essex Community Players announces a 2018-19 Season; a deck stacked with laughs and a dramatic conclusion. The 60th Anniversary Season opens with Barefoot in the Park, a tribute to both the recent passing of legendary playwright Neil Simon and a nostalgic nod to The Player’s 60 years. Barefoot in the Park is the timeless story of a young married couple, having just enjoyed a magical, six-day honeymoon at the Plaza hotel in New York, settling into their new home – a tiny, sparsely-appointed “fixer-upper” of a fifth-floor walk-up on Manhattan’s east side. Not only must they learn to adapt to the limitations and inconveniences of their surroundings, but they must also do the same with their relationship. Barefoot in the Park, first opened on Broadway just five years after ECP began producing community theater and has received multiple Essex productions through the years. This classic romantic comedy runs October 12 – 27.

Continuing its tradition of a show for the holidays, December brings The ReGifters by Robert Lynn. When a couple "regifts" a not-so-great Christmas present, then finds out it's worth a fortune, they will stop at nothing to get it back. But they're not the only ones who rewrapped it… In the mad pursuit to reclaim the gift, everyone who gave it away learns about friendship, real wealth, and the value of a gift truly given. The ReGifters will run at Memorial Hall from December November 30 - December 9.

March brings The Tell-Tale Farce by Don Zolidis, a freewheeling, door-slamming farce with a touch of the macabre. It's 1848, and Edgar Allan Poe is just coming off the spectacular success of "The Raven." Unfortunately, it's only earned him a grand total of nine dollars. So when a wealthy dowager commissions him to write her a poem for the vast sum of one hundred dollars, he leaps at the chance. Only problem: the man who shows up to write the poem isn't Poe, he's Poe's mailman, and he's on a quest to woo the dowager's spinster niece. Playing Poe is harder than it looks, though, especially when your mustache keeps falling off, the teenage grand-daughter of the house is lusting after you, and Poe's arch-nemesis, Rufus Griswold, just happens to be dropping by to settle old scores. The Tell-Tale Farce runs March 1 – 16.

Shifting from “a touch” of macabre to full on tragedy, The Players will close this anniversary season with an open-casting production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth May 2 - 10. Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself. Known by the superstitious as “The Scottish Play” this classic play dramatizes the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake.
