Synopsis:
A woman is holed up in a cheap motel room at the edge of the Mojave Desert. Her estranged lover, a modern-day cowboy, a rodeo rider and part-time Hollywood stunt man at the end of his career, has just driven thousands of miles to reclaim her. They love each other. They hate each other. But the bond that cleaves them together cannot be broken no matter what either does.
This claustrophobic motel room becomes a pressure cooker of past resentments, present cross-purposes, and the struggle for each to become whole.
Watching over the proceedings is a ghostly presence: The Old Man. What he has to do with this apocalyptic lovers’ quarrel only gradually comes into focus.
At the peak of this battle, in walks the woman’s date for the evening: An unsuspecting, decent guy who only wants to take a lady to the movies.
What happens next is classic Sam Shepard: Mysterious, funny, harrowing, intense. And that cheap motel room becomes a portal through which Shepard takes us as he examines some of the most fundamental questions that touch all of us about the very nature of identity.
Please note that this play deals with adult themes that may disturb some viewers. There is a firearm onstage at one point, and gunfire occurs during show. Additionally, physical conflict take place.
